What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive procedure that can improve the negative and positive symptoms of a variety of behavioral disorders, autism spectrum cases, learning disabilities and mental illnesses including autism, ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety, alcoholism and substance abuse. Neurofeedback is a self-regulation tool that over time, with practice, allows the individual's brain to work more efficiently and harmoniously.

neurofeedback setup

Neurofeedback is brainwave therapy

This form of biofeedback presents a patient's brainwave activity to them on a computer screen in real time. Patients can see and hear representations of brain wave activity and learn to match the brain wave to the goals that are set. This activity is correlated with interactive tasks on the screen, and as brainwave activity changes, so does the activity on screen. During each 45 minute session, the individual learns how to regulate brain rhythms to reflect their neurofeedback. Through active repetition, this process allows for improved control and stress levels, emotional reactions, concentration, and more. This is a painless process that even children with autism can feel comfortable with.

What is the procedure?

The neurofeedback procedure begins by assessing brain activity, recording EEG data for in-depth analysis. Brainwaves, or brain signals, are evaluated as they relate to learning ability, concentration, and emotional control. This evaluation is then used as a basis for neurofeedback, focusing on deficit areas that contribute to an individual's disorder.

After completing the initial EEG and assessment a protocol will be determined by a neurofeedback provider. This protocol will be input into the neurofeedback software program and you are ready to begin neurofeedback. A typical training session lasts from 45min to 1 hour. During each session you will spend time working on goals for training and relaxation techniques to develop your mind-body connection. This takes practice and like any other new skill, it will take time and repetition to make a change. Some people relate this therapy to being like a gym for your brain. A neurofeedback provider is your personal trainer and you are being instructed on how best to strengthen your brain.

Are there side effects?

Some individuals may experience fatigue or sensitivity following a therapy session. Typically, these experiences are mild. Usually, a small adjustment to the neurofeedback protocol is all that is needed to reduce or eliminate these symptoms.
