More children will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders this year than cancer, diabetes, Downs Syndrome and AIDS combined. These disorders, including Asperger Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, are terrible developmental disorders that may cause individuals to be withdrawn from the rest of the world, ignoring all attempts at communication. Autism therapy sessions can be costly, and offer little promise of improvement, making living with the disorder increasingly difficult for patient and the family.

The Autistic Diagnosis

In autism, an individual is overwhelmed by incoming information, the individual's brain unable to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant sensory stimulus, responding to all stimulus with the same priority. This leads to the individual's inability to interact with his or her environment, paralyzed by too much incoming sensory information.

The Brain Treatment Center offers a new therapy

Through treatment with Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS / TMS)*, studies have shown patients with autism may improve by significant margins (See our Research Section). Patients with autism who respond to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation have been shown to be better able to concentrate and center on relevant information, no longer overwhelmed to the point where they cannot interact with the outside world. We have found that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation can be used in combination with therapy and medication treatment, increasing the potential for positive results. In a recent case, rTMS was demonstrated to show improvement in a woman with autism primarily in the domain of social relating and interpersonal understanding- a self-report that was also corroborated by family members: see link here

Medication alone can only do so much, and it brings with it undesirable side effects that often last as long as the medication is being taken. Even with proper medical treatment, the source of the disorder remains the same, and symptoms are only reduced or masked, not treated. rTMS / TMS treatment directly targets the brain, which allows for minimal side effects and potentially significant improvement in symptoms. We use quantitative encephalography (EEG) along with rTMS / TMS to help provide a clearer picture of changes in the brain. The method allows for tracking neuronal change as well as addressing every case as unique.
